The Chicago Bears are anticipating the return of their first-round rookie wide receiver, Rome Odunze, to the practice field as they resume OTAs this week. Odunze, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been sidelined since experiencing hamstring tightness on the first day of rookie minicamp on May 10. As a precaution, he did not participate in the remaining minicamp sessions or the initial OTA practices last week, according to NBC Sports Chicago.
However, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus expressed optimism about Odunze's recovery, stating he is "hopeful" the rookie will begin ramping up his activity in the upcoming practices starting Tuesday, May 28.
«Rome's starting to work out there, did some walk-throughs today,» Eberflus told reporters after last Thursday's practice. «We're hopeful that he'll be starting to ramp back in there next week during the OTAs that we have next week.»
While Odunze has been recuperating, the Bears have relied on veterans DJ Moore and Keenan Allen to take reps with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Odunze's return will be pivotal for the Bears' offense, as he showed immense potential in college, catching 92 passes for an FBS-leading 1,640 yards and 13 touchdowns for Washington in 2023. Building chemistry with Williams is crucial for the team's future success.
The Bears have six more practices scheduled before a break leading up to training camp in late July. They will conclude OTAs with three voluntary practices (May 28-29, May 31) this week and wrap up offseason activities with a mandatory minicamp next week (June 4-6).
Bears Don't Need to Rush Rome Odunze to Stardom
Although having a healthy Rome Odunze is beneficial for the Chicago Bears, there is no immediate need to rush his development. Odunze, a top-10 pick and one of the most highly-rated receiver prospects in recent drafts, has already shown his potential. The Bears were so keen on securing him that they considered trading up from the ninth pick to ensure they didn't miss out.
Odunze is poised to play a significant role in the Bears' offense in 2024, yet he is currently their third-best receiver. DJ Moore remains the Bears' No. 1 receiver after a standout 2023 season with 96 catches for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns. Additionally, the Bears acquired six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen, who is coming off one of his best seasons with the Chargers.
With Moore and Allen leading the charge, along with veteran tight end Cole Kmet and newly signed running back D'Andre Swift, the Bears' offense is well-equipped. This depth allows Odunze to integrate into the offense without the pressure of being the primary target immediately.
### Tyler Scott Could Be Secret Weapon for Bears in 2024
Amid the attention on the Bears' receiving additions this offseason, Tyler Scott has been somewhat overlooked. However, the 2023 fourth-round pick could emerge as a crucial asset for the Bears in 2024.
Scott had a modest rookie season, with limited opportunities and a few notable mistakes. Despite this, his speed and potential have not gone unnoticed. Bears general manager Ryan Poles praised Scott's speed and ball-tracking ability, comparing him to Seattle Seahawks star Tyler Lockett. With offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who previously coached Lockett, Scott might see a strategic utilization that highlights his deep-ball potential.
If Odunze lives up to his first-round potential and Scott makes significant strides in his second year, the Bears could boast one of the most dynamic receiving corps in the NFL by the end of the 2024 season.
