The Chicago Bears have kicked off their first week of organized team activities (OTAs) with players gearing up both mentally and physically for the upcoming training camp later this summer.
In the ongoing tussle between offense and defense, it appears the defenders have the upper hand this week, drawing on the same intensity they exhibited late last season.
The offense, however, entered OTAs at a disadvantage. They are adapting to a new scheme designed by offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, and faced the defense while missing a few key starters.
Bears coach Matt Eberflus acknowledged the team's early struggles during this initial phase of OTAs but remains optimistic about their progress.
«It's not perfect right now, by any stretch of the imagination,» Eberflus said. «That's defense, offense, special teams. Everything's a work in progress, but we're certainly making progress.»
Veteran wide receiver DJ Moore, with seven years in the league, had a measured response to the offense's early difficulties.
«It's frustrating, but we also know that we're learning a new system,» Moore said. «The defense has been in their system for what, like three years now? Plus, they're out there having fun while we're frustrated because we're not achieving our goals. But on the flip side, we know that we're still learning and coming together as an offense.»
The 2024 Bears are still taking shape, with several months of development ahead before the real tests begin in Week 1.
