Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports that Bears officials are convening to "finalize plans" for their quarterback strategy, aiming to have a clear direction by the time the NFL Scouting Combine kicks off next week.
Last year, the Bears opted to trade their top pick to the Carolina Panthers in March for a significant return, including Carolina's 2024 first-round pick. This trade ultimately handed the Bears the No. 1 spot for this year's draft following the Panthers' 2-15 record with Bryce Young at the helm.
Despite Fields delivering a commendable performance in his third season, evidenced by an 86.3 quarterback rating, the Bears now find themselves in a position to potentially select a top prospect like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
Breer highlights that while the Bears hold Fields in high regard both as a player and a person, the allure of drafting Williams might prove irresistible. During the Senior Bowl in Alabama, there was interest from other teams in Fields, suggesting the Bears could look to acquire an experienced player in any trade involving Fields, their 2021 first-round selection.
According to Breer, a trade involving Fields could materialize "soon," as teams begin to address their quarterback needs in the offseason.
