In a groundbreaking move, the Chicago Bears have appointed Jennifer King as their assistant running backs coach, marking a significant milestone in the franchise's history. Multiple reports confirm King's historic hiring.
At 39 years old, King has steadily climbed the coaching ladder, breaking barriers along the way. Her most recent role was as the assistant running backs coach for the Washington Commanders, where she became the first Black woman to hold a full-time coaching position in NFL history.
King's journey in coaching began as an intern on Ron Rivera's coaching staff, spanning across different teams over three seasons. Rivera initially hired her as a wide receivers coaching intern for the Carolina Panthers after meeting her at the NFL's Women's Forum in 2018. Subsequently, she transitioned to a running backs coach intern with the Panthers before joining Rivera at the Commanders.
In addition to her NFL experience, King has held coaching positions with the Arizona Hotshots in the now-defunct AAF and served as an offensive assistant at Dartmouth.
Prior to her coaching career, King played in the Women's Football Alliance for nearly two decades, showcasing her versatility across various positions. She also ventured into women's college basketball coaching, achieving success as both an assistant and head coach, leading Johnson & Wales to a Division II national title.
Outside of sports, King has pursued diverse interests, working as a flight attendant and a police officer.
As of the 2023 season, King's appointment brings the total number of full-time female coaches in the NFL to nine, further highlighting the league's ongoing efforts towards diversity and inclusion.
