NFL pundit Colin Cowherd thinks the crux of the problem lies in the coaching staff's lack of offensive ingenuity, particularly detrimental to a talent like Justin Fields.
"Every Bears game feels like they're just expecting Justin to be the hero," Cowherd commented on The Herd. "It seems chaotic, overly dependent on his mobility."
"While Jordan Love benefits from Matt LaFleur's guidance in understanding the game, Justin Fields seems left to his devices. And that seems to be the narrative with the Bears. Historically, they haven't nurtured a legendary quarterback or receiver." Cowherd highlights that the Bears' focus has traditionally been on defense.
The 1985 Bears, fondly remembered as the Monsters of the Midway, embodied the gritty spirit of Chicago. Yet, that ferocity hasn't brought them a Super Bowl win in nearly four decades. Cowherd observes this same cycle, pointing out the Bears' limited offensive thinking. The helm of the team, under the leadership of the defensive-focused coach Matt Eberflus and his associate Alan Williams, lacks a compelling offensive strategy.
Luke Getsy, entrusted with directing the offense, had a subpar showing during the Sunday game. The tactics and play configurations he chose were not only ineffective for Fields but also seemed overly rudimentary for an NFL setup. J.T. O'Sullivan's recent analysis in "The QB School" gives an in-depth critique of this.
On the flip side, the Packers appear to be transitioning smoothly post-Aaron Rodgers, with Jordan Love showcasing his potential against the supposedly fortified Bears defense.
He posted 245 yards with three touchdowns and a completion rate above 55%. More than just statistics, he displayed confidence, precision, and agility, even if he occasionally missed in terms of accuracy.
Fields, in contrast, seemed to be under far more pressure.
"Jordan Love appeared poised, unhurried. They had a coherent strategy and he was well-supported," observed Cowherd.
The striking differences between the two young quarterbacks underscore the pressing issues the Bears and Fields are grappling with. For the team to accomplish their much-voiced ambition of clinching the NFC North, Cowherd insists they urgently need to bolster their coaching quality.
"Mastering calculus always becomes a tad easier with a tutor," concluded Cowherd.
