The Lions disclosed that Williams and Stanley Berryhill were given six-game suspensions, while safety C.J. Moore and wide receiver Quintez Cephus, who received indefinite suspensions, were let go by the team.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney also faced an indefinite suspension. Rapoport mentioned that Williams and Berryhill's suspensions were a result of betting on college games at the Lions' team facilities, while Moore, Cephus, and Toney allegedly bet on NFL games.
Cephus, Moore, and Toney can apply for reinstatement after one year.
ESPN's Eric Woodyard reported that the Lions terminated several staff members across various departments last month for breaching the gambling policy.
Woodyard emphasized that these terminations were distinct from the penalties issued by the league on Friday. He said, "The Lions became aware of the NFL's investigation about a month ago before the league reached a final decision."
Lions general manager Brad Holmes released a statement in the team's announcement:
The Commanders shared a statement about Toney's suspension through Woodyard:
Williams, who was selected 12th overall in the previous year's draft, missed the initial 12 games of his rookie season due to a torn ACL recovery. After returning, he touched the ball only twice, but both plays resulted in at least 40-yard gains.
