ESPN's Jordan Reid believes the Bears could take an unexpected route. He analyzed the draft from a value-based perspective and found that, in his projections, the Bears wouldn't choose a lineman for either position. Instead, they'd return to their previous focus: defensive backs.
This idea isn't as far-fetched as it may seem. The Bears still have a gap to fill at the outside corner spot opposite Jaylon Johnson, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. If Poles isn't keen on offering Johnson an expensive new deal, selecting a top corner like Witherspoon with the #9 pick would make senseespecially given Poles' affinity for local talent.
However, all signs point to Poles' desire to trade down the 9th pick and secure additional Day 2 selections. If that's the case, Reid's analysis may not hold much weight. But if the Bears can't trade down, the possibility of choosing someone like Witherspoon over available offensive tackles shouldn't be entirely dismissed. After all, Poles has previously identified the cornerback position as one of the NFL's most valuable.
Should the Bears go down this route, the decision would undoubtedly cause a stir among fans who are concerned about the state of both lines. However, if Witherspoon proves to be a stellar player, any initial complaints would likely fade. Poles has always maintained that his focus extends beyond the 2023 season, striving to build a strong team for the long haul. If he believes Witherspoon can enjoy a successful, lasting NFL career, it's difficult to argue with his reasoning.
