It's a peculiar situation when a team finds itself eclipsed in the limelight during a game in which they weren't even competing. But such was the fate of the Chicago Bears last Thursday.
While facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings' prodigy Justin Jefferson rocketed past a significant NFL milestone: he became the fastest player to achieve 5,000 receiving yards. And he did it in style, logging 338 receptions for a staggering 5,032 total yards in just 52 career games.
But here's where it becomes particularly biting for the Bears: Jefferson, at a spry 24 years of age and only two games into his fourth NFL season, now boasts more career receiving yards than any player in the Bears' entire history. A century-long history, it should be added.
To put it in perspective, the Bears' franchise record for receiving yards, held by Johnny Morris from his 1958-67 tenure, stands at 5,059. This is currently the lowest franchise-record across the entire NFL.
One might say that's quite an unintentional blow to Chicago's pride.
Yet hope springs eternal, and the Bears will aim to brush off this incidental shade. All eyes are now set on the upcoming match in Tampa Bay where quarterbacks Justin Fields and Baker Mayfield are slated to clash. Here's to hoping the Bears can set some records of their own.
