During Cousins' introductory press conference with the Falcons on Wednesday, he was questioned about whether he would retain his No. 8 jersey in Atlanta, which he has sported throughout his entire NFL career. Pitts, who has worn the same number since being drafted by the Falcons in 2021, expressed his desire to keep it. Cousins humorously offered to make a charitable donation to a foundation of Pitts' choice in exchange for the number. However, Pitts had only one request � more opportunities to catch the ball.
Cousins recounted the exchange, stating, "He was funny about it. I said I'll write a check to whatever foundation. I'm not gonna let you just give me the number. I want to make it worth your while, you know, make a donation or whatever it needs to be. He said, �I just want targets every game.' He was joking. He kind of winked. I joked with him and said good answer."
Cousins hinted that the NFL might have a say in whether he can claim Pitts' jersey number, suggesting that factors like jersey sales could influence the decision.
Despite the jersey number discussion, Pitts' performance on the field speaks volumes. As a rookie in 2021, he racked up 1,026 yards and earned a Pro Bowl nod. Although injuries limited him to 28 catches in 2022, he managed to tally 53 receptions for 667 yards and 3 touchdowns last season.
With the promise of Cousins' steady quarterbacking, Pitts is likely eager for the opportunity to excel on the field, regardless of what number adorns his jersey.
