Owner Jerry Jones and his team face a series of tough decisions this offseason. Will they extend Dak Prescott's contract? And what about pending free agents like running back Tony Pollard and offensive tackle Tyron Smith will they stay or depart?
If Pollard departs, the Cowboys will need to secure a suitable replacement for the player who recently achieved back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Could the answer lie in recruiting a former rushing champion?
ESPN analyst Matt Bowen recently explored potential fits for the top 50 free agents of 2024, suggesting the Cowboys pursue Las Vegas Raiders' standout Josh Jacobs as Pollard's successor:
"With the likelihood of Tony Pollard departing Dallas, the Cowboys could turn their attention to Jacobs. He's been a workhorse for the Raiders, displaying the ability to power through defenders with his low pad level and elusiveness. Jacobs, who topped the NFL in rushing in 2022, could also serve as a valuable receiving option for Dak Prescott, adding versatility to the offense with his ability to excel on swing passes, screens, and check-downs."
Despite leading the league in rushing yards (1,653) in 2022, Jacobs and the Raiders failed to reach a contract agreement last offseason. Consequently, he settled for a one-year deal worth up to $12 million.
Despite missing four games in 2023 due to injury, Jacobs still managed to accumulate 805 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Remarkably, he surpassed 1,000 yards of offense for the fifth consecutive season.
At just 26 years old, Jacobs presents an enticing prospect for the Cowboys on a multi-year contract. Behind one of the league's premier offensive lines, a fully fit Jacobs could easily replicate his 1,000-yard rushing feats in Dallas.
