The Chicago Bears brought in James O'Shaughnessy for a visit last Monday and it looks like both sides were happy with what they saw!
He has played for the Kansas City Chiefs (20152016), the New England Patriots (2017) and most recently, the Jacksonville Jaguars (20172021).
He started 40 games in his career so far, including 13 starts in 2020. O'Shaughnessy is listed at 6"4, 245 pounds. While his receiving stats are nothing to write home about, he is a very capable red zone threat and he is most effective as a run blocker.
I know that a lot of fans will ask: why another tight end? The Bears already have Cole Kmet on the roster, they re-signed Jesper Horsted last week and two days ago, they sign FA Ryan Griffin.
This is purely a depth signing. The tight end position is one of the most important positions to have solid depth. Luke Getsy is known to play a 3-tight end set in short-yardage situations a lot and O'Shaughnessy can be a great blocker in those situations. So, having 4 tight ends on the roster is perfectly normal at this point and we should expect them to bring in probably one or two more before training camp!
Here are a few of his highlights:
