Bill Belichick, who currently doesn't hold an NFL head coaching position and may not secure one before the 2024 season kicks off, remains an intriguing figure with various potential opportunities. One of these prospects, as discussed during a recent segment on "Get Up" by Adam Schefter and former New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, points toward the Big Apple.
Tannenbaum, after contemplating why Belichick was overlooked for all the recent NFL head coaching vacancies, shifted his focus to the 2025 hiring cycle and made a thought-provoking prediction. According to Tannenbaum, Bill Belichick will "loom large" in New York, but not with his former team, the New England Patriots. Instead, the former Jets executive believes that Belichick's name will become a topic of discussion within the New York Giants organization, especially if Brian Daboll's team continues to struggle during the 2024 season.
Tannenbaum stated during the show, "The most significant influence [Belichick] is going to have is in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He has a strong relationship with the Mara family. The moment the Giants face adversity and lose a game, Brian Daboll, whether it's warranted or not, will be confronted with that question in every press conference."
In his first season with the Giants in 2022, Daboll led the team to a 9-7-1 record and secured a wild card victory. However, the 2023 season was far more challenging, marked by a disappointing 6-11 record and rumors of Daboll being "disruptive" and difficult to work with. With the team surrounded by negativity heading into the offseason, Daboll is likely to have limited room for error in 2024. Furthermore, if Daboll and the Giants struggle early in the season, John Mara, the team's owner, could quickly turn to Bill Belichick as a potential solution.
