Chicago Bears guard Teven Jenkins is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. Although there's a possibility he might return to the team, it increasingly feels like this will be his last year with the Bears.
The fit between Jenkins and the Bears never quite clicked. His rookie year was marred by an off-season back surgery, and shortly after, the general manager and head coach who drafted him were let go. Since then, Jenkins has been shuffled around different positions.
Initially, Ryan Pace viewed Jenkins as a tackle, while Ryan Poles saw him as a guard. Even at guard, Jenkins had to split time with Lucas Patrick, who was underperforming and dealing with an injured hand. It was clear Jenkins needed to prove himself to Poles.
Despite his efforts, Jenkins did not win Poles over and subsequently missed more time due to injury. The Bears' signing of Nate Davis in the offseason further complicated matters, pushing Jenkins to his third position change in as many years.
Jenkins missed time again at the start of this season, contributing to the Bears' early struggles. In response, the Bears bolstered their depth with players like Ryan Bates, Coleman Shelton, and Matt Pryor, alongside Ja'Tyre Carter, who had replaced Jenkins last year.
Teven Jenkins' future with the Chicago Bears appears uncertain. When asked about his contract situation, Jenkins admitted that nothing is on the table, suggesting he is resigned to using this year as an audition for other teams.
Given his injury history, constant position changes, and lack of faith from Ryan Poleswho did not draft himthe Bears are unlikely to re-sign Jenkins. Even if he performs well, the Bears might be hesitant to meet his market value. If he plays poorly, it would only reinforce Poles' doubts, further diminishing his chances of staying with the team.
In almost any scenario, it seems the Bears will not be re-signing Teven Jenkins.
