The Chicago Bears' decision to trade down from their original draft position opened up numerous possibilities for their draft strategy. However, as the draft draws nearer, it's becoming easier to predict which direction the team will ultimately take.

Bears Hint Not Drafting Top Receiver in The Draft

At first, many speculated that it could increase the likelihood of them selecting Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the standout wide receiver from Ohio State. Smith-Njigba is widely regarded as one of the top receivers in the draft, and his prior experience as a freshman and depth receiver for Justin Fields could make him a great long-term pairing with the Bears' quarterback.

Despite Jaxon Smith-Njigba's potential as a top wide receiver in the draft, it's difficult to see the Chicago Bears going in that direction when looking at their current depth chart, especially with so many tackle options available. Furthermore, recent comments from Ryan Poles suggest that the Bears are content with their current wide receiver corps, especially considering the addition of D.J. Moore. It's possible that the team may only select Smith-Njigba if they believe he's the clear-cut best option remaining in the draft.

"The one thing I really like is, we have three different types of receivers. We've got a guy [in Claypool] who's a big body guy that can play inside/outside. We have Mooney who can separate and run vertically and make plays. Then DJ is just a strong, physical guy who can separate and make plays after the catch too. I like how everything's set up. And then you throw Cole in the mix, too. [Fields] has weapons. We have to continue to work up front and get better there, too."

Ryan Poles is actively constructing a team, and his recent acquisition of D.J. Moore was done with the intention of rounding out the team's receiving corps. With players like Equanimeous St. Brown and Velus Jones already on the roster, any additional wide receiver selections during the draft are likely to occur during the later rounds.

If the Chicago Bears were to draft a wide receiver, it could potentially be bad news for Chase Claypool. After a difficult 2022 season, Claypool is entering the final year of his contract and could potentially be pushed down the depth chart if a new receiver is brought in. However, it's worth noting that the team's coaching staff still holds high hopes for Claypool and may not be willing to let him go so easily.

Contrary to popular opinion among fans, the Chicago Bears' coaching staff is very high on Chase Claypool and his potential. Additionally, they hold D.J. Moore in high regard, seeing him as a first-round talent. Considering that Darnell Mooney was the team's top receiver last season, it seems unlikely that the Bears would use their early draft picks on another receiver, let alone in the first round.
