In the NFL, one thing is certain: there are no certainties. Teams and players should never assume anything, especially when it comes to advancing deep into the playoffs. It just takes one crucial injury, a loss, a coaching change, or a pivotal moment for it all to come to an end.

Unfortunately, the Detroit Lions experienced this firsthand, losing 34-31 to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. The Lions held a commanding 24-7 lead at halftime but saw their hopes dashed as the 49ers mounted a comeback with 27 unanswered points to secure their spot in Super Bowl LVIII a stage the Lions have never reached.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell didn't sugarcoat his assessment of the team's future as he candidly shared his thoughts with reporters after the game: "Look, I told those guys, 'This may have been our only shot.' Do I think that? No... However, I know how hard it is to get here. I'm well aware. It's going to be twice as hard to get to this point next year than it was this year."

It's a statement that holds some truth, as some teams peak and then face challenges in maintaining their success. However, it may not have been the most encouraging message to convey to his team.

Nevertheless, there is hope for the Lions to make a comeback next year, thanks in part to their impressive rookie class, which played crucial roles on both sides of the ball. Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Brian Branch, and Jack Campbell all contributed to the Lions' historic journey, including winning their first NFC North title and making their first conference title game appearance in nearly three decades.

The Lions finished the season with a 12-5 record, defeating the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs. They came close but couldn't hang on in the second half against the 49ers, who had beaten every team in the NFC during the regular season and postseason.

Several factors could impact Detroit's future, such as how quarterback Jared Goff performs under a new offensive coordinator if Ben Johnson departs. Additionally, the Green Bay Packers with Jordan Love are on the rise in the NFC North, while the quarterback situations of the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings remain uncertain.

For now, Campbell and his team will need to reflect on what went wrong and focus on making improvements for the 2024 season.
