The Lions had a 24-7 lead at halftime, seemingly on the brink of their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. However, their fortunes took a turn for the worse in the second half, as the San Francisco 49ers scored 27 unanswered points. In a curious move, Campbell opted to forgo two field goal attempts in the second half, which were from 45 and 47 yards, choosing to go for it on fourth down instead. Unfortunately for the Lions, they failed to convert on both attempts, and those missed opportunities cost them dearly in the 34-31 loss.
Nevertheless, Goff expressed his strong support for Campbell's highly aggressive approach on fourth downs, as reported by ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin.
"I love it. Love it," Goff emphasized. "Keep us out there... It shows he believes in us as players."
Jameson Williams' touchdown reception with less than a minute remaining provided a glimmer of hope for Detroit, but the 49ers recovered the onside kick, securing their first NFC title in four years.
While the Lions are left to contemplate what might have been, the 49ers are gearing up for Super Bowl 58, where they will face the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of their thrilling showdown in Miami four years ago, which saw Patrick Mahomes and his team emerge victorious.
