Two significant decisions loom large, involving the future of cornerback Jaylon Johnson and quarterback Justin Fields. Johnson, who is coming off a standout season, is likely to secure a long-term contract and remain with the team. However, the situation surrounding Fields remains uncertain. The Bears face the choice of potentially trading Fields and selecting Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. But would this truly address the underlying issues?
According to Johnson, the answer is no. In a recent episode of the "All Facts No Brakes" podcast hosted by former NFL receiver Keyshawn Johnson, the Bears cornerback candidly expressed his thoughts on the matter. Johnson firmly believes that coaching has been the primary obstacle in Justin Fields' development.
"It's tough for me and him (Fields) having different coordinators, different coaches, different regimes come in and out, and I think it's hard to truly adjust as a young quarterback," Johnson stated.
"I definitely, for me, can see the talent he has and the throws he can make, the accuracy.
"Advocating for his removal with a simplistic 'he's not the answer' approach... I don't think that's the solution. I believe it's a shortcut that absolves the coaching staff of accountability."
These words from the Bears cornerback carry significant weight. He openly calls for the coaching staff to take responsibility, and his perspective is valid. The constant turnover of offensive coordinators, exemplified by Luke Getsy, has hindered Fields from playing to his strengths.
"I think he has not had the opportunity to truly be developed yet, now going on his third coordinator in his fourth year," Johnson pointed out.
Johnson makes a compelling argument. Subjecting a young quarterback to a revolving door of offensive coordinators in such a short span is neither fair nor wise. This approach risks hampering player development, especially for quarterbacks, which has been a recurring issue for the Bears.
Towards the end of his remarks, Johnson also alluded to the need for the Bears to provide Fields with more offensive weapons.
"We definitely need more, I feel like, as far as playmakers and guys to put him in the best position."
In this regard, his assessment appears to be on point.
