Fields had played a few drives in the prior two games but week 3 versus the Cleveland Browns was the first true start of his NFL career.
Let's just say it did not go according to plan. He completed 6 passes out of 20 attempts and a mediocre 68 passing yards. Fields was not able to showcase his athletic ability in the running game as well since he only had 12 rushing yards. He was also sacked a staggering 9 times!! It was a complete disaster on the offensive side of the ball. The bears lost 26-6 and they were completely dominated in the total yards department. In fact, the Browns had 418 total yards versus 47 for the Bears. This was the biggest difference in yards in a single game last year...
Here is what Veal has to say: «It was bad,» he said. «He took a beating that day. It was kind of crazy and weird at the same time. . . . I know he was a little pissed about it but I didn't get an explanation. And I really didn't ask because I know he was in a situation where he was really pissed off about it.»
Veal then mentioned that he and Justin have done multiple sessions together this offseason to help him prepare for what the Bears' new coaching staff is going to be asking of him and that Fields knows there's a lot he can improve on for the future.
«He played well at times and he struggled at times, which is what happens with rookie quarterbacks,» Veal said.
I think Justin Fields is going to be a great player for a long time. He has literally all the physical tools you would like out of your franchise quarterback and he also has the intangibles. When you combined that with the hard work he seemingly has been putting on all off-season, you could have something special. However, the ball is now in the new Bears regime and the front office's court to put a solid team surrounding him in order for Fields to have the success he is capable of.
