The New England Patriots are reportedly considering former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy for their vacant offensive coordinator position, as reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero has also mentioned that the Patriots have interviewed San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury for the same role.

The Patriots found themselves in need of a new offensive coordinator after Bill O'Brien, the previous OC, departed for Ohio State, coinciding with Bill Belichick's departure as head coach, with Jerod Mayo stepping in as his successor.

Luke Getsy has an extensive coaching history, having served in various roles with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Bears as their offensive coordinator in 2022. In his tenure with the Bears, the team made progress, improving from 28th in total offense and 23rd in scoring in 2022 to 20th in total offense and 18th in scoring in the latest season. Quarterback Justin Fields also showed improvement under Getsy's coaching, setting personal records in completion percentage, passing yards, and touchdown passes, while wide receiver D.J. Moore had a career-best season.

However, despite these improvements, the Bears decided to part ways with Getsy, possibly indicating their plans to explore a new direction, which could include trading Fields and selecting a quarterback with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Patriots are expected to make significant changes, possibly including a new quarterback, following a challenging 2023 season where they went 4-13 and ranked 31st in scoring. Both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe struggled at quarterback, making it likely that New England will target a new signal-caller in the upcoming draft, potentially someone like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, or a veteran like Kirk Cousins. They may also consider a trade for Justin Fields.

Luke Getsy is not the only team interested in his services, as he has already completed an interview with the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Jeremy Fowler.

In contrast, Brian Fleury, if chosen as the Patriots' offensive coordinator, would be stepping into his first OC role. He has spent the past two seasons as the San Francisco 49ers' tight ends coach under head coach Kyle Shanahan, previously working as a defensive quality control coach and an offensive quality control coach with the Niners. Although Fleury lacks play-calling experience, coaches who have been part of Shanahan's staff have been highly sought after, with examples like Mike McDaniel achieving success with the Miami Dolphins after leaving San Francisco. The Patriots may hope to replicate this success with Fleury.
