REPORT: Bears Likely to Sign Exceptional Two-Way Running Back
Many expect the Bears to play it safe and focus on strengthening their offensive or defensive line with their No. 9 draft pick. However, there are whispers that they might take a bolder approach.
Robinson is anticipated to be not just one of the draft's top prospects, but also an immediate force among NFL running backs. In his three years at Texas, he accumulated over 3,400 rushing yards and 41 total touchdowns. Standing at 6 feet and weighing 215 pounds, Robinson showcased his impressive speed with a 4.46-second 40-yard dash at the combine.
Khalil Herbert remains a key player for the Bears, and they have also brought in D'Onta Foreman and Travis Homer on short-term contracts this offseason. The team may already have a viable starter within this group, or the three could form a competent running back committee.
Nonetheless, adding a high-caliber talent like Robinson to support quarterback Justin Fields could prove beneficial. In 2022, Fields demonstrated exceptional rushing skills as a quarterback, accumulating 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns on 160 attempts, achieving a league-leading 7.1 yards per carry, according to Pro Football Reference. The Bears are well used to a strong ground game.
In fact, they boasted the most productive rushing offense in the league last season. As a unit, they amassed over 3,000 yards, breaking the franchise record for team rushing yards and leading the NFL in 2022.
Despite their success, the Bears lost David Montgomery, their reliable starter for four years, to the Detroit Lions in free agency with a three-year contract. They have since added D'Onta Foreman and Travis Homer to complement Khalil Herbert, the standout third-year running back who gained 731 yards in support of Montgomery last season. With these additions, the Bears' running back lineup appears to be on solid footing.
