The restructuring continued this past Friday when the Bills announced the signing of veteran wide receiver Chase Claypool to a one-year contract. Claypool, drafted in the second round by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Notre Dame, has also had stints with the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears. He initially made a notable impact in Pittsburgh during his rookie year, catching 62 passes for 873 yards and nine touchdowns, and even rushing for two more. However, his productivity has declined each season since, culminating in a total of just three touchdowns over the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons.
After his performance dipped, Claypool found himself out of favor and was traded from the Steelers to the Bears for a second-round pick. His time in Chicago didn't revive his career, leading to minimal playtime and an eventual trade to Miami, where he only played a marginal role. After languishing in free agency post-draft, the Bills have now given him another chance.
Claypool's early career numbers suggest there's untapped potential, yet three teams over the last three years haven't managed to harness it. The Bills hope to succeed where the Steelers, Bears, and Dolphins have not. Given the modest investment, this move is a low-risk venture with the possibility of a high reward if they can reignite his earlier form.
