The Chicago Bears have taken steps to seek a $7.2 million refund in a property tax appeal concerning the former Arlington International Racecourse location, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
This request has been formally submitted to the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board by the Bears.
Despite recent discussions surrounding a potential lakefront stadium plan, the Bears continue to retain ownership of the site.
Recent Developments: Challenges Over Short-Term Property Taxes
Recent developments reveal that the Bears, along with three school districts, have encountered obstacles regarding short-term property taxes in Arlington Heights.
The village has disclosed its proposal from late February, which was presented to both the Bears and the school districts. This proposal suggests a figure lower than the assessment determined by the Cook County Board of Review, which amounted to approximately $9 million, according to Arlington Heights officials.
Outlined in the village's proposal are provisions for the Bears to pay $6.3 million for the year 2023 and $3.6 million in 2024.
Governor Pritzker's Remarks on Bears' Stadium Plans
In a separate development, Governor Pritzker recently addressed the Bears' intentions to construct a domed stadium along the Chicago lakefront.
The Bears announced their plans last month to invest over $2 billion in private funding to establish a publicly-owned domed stadium and park space in Chicago.
Under this proposal, Soldier Field, with the exception of the revered colonnades honoring veterans, would be demolished, and a new domed stadium would be erected just south of the current Soldier Field location.
