This event is a period of mutual discovery for both the players and the team.
After inking his first contract with the Bears on Saturday, Australian punter Tory Taylor concluded his rookie minicampan introduction to what lies ahead. Despite spending four years at Iowa, Taylor found the conditions in Chicago notably different.
"One thing that took me by surprise is just how strong the wind is here," Taylor remarked. "I guess that's why they call it the Windy City. But these are just the kinds of things I'll learn along the way.
"There's a lot to be pleased about and just as much to learn from. As long as I'm playing football, I'm eager to keep learning and improving," he added.
Taylor may soon discover that the nickname "Windy City" originally referred to the boastful claims of its leaders rather than the actual weather. Nonetheless, the challenges of playing in unpredictable conditions at Soldier Field are real, as historical moments like Giants punter Sean Landetta's missed punt in the 1985 playoffswhich led to a Bears touchdowndemonstratively show.
