A New Clear-Cut Favorite Has Emerged In The Sean Payton Head Coaching Sweepstakes
As we approach the final week of the 2022 NFL regular season, several franchises are already looking ahead to 2023. A few of them will be seeking new head coaches in the offseason.
The Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, and Carolina Panthers fired their head coaches during the season, and other teams will likely join them in a matter of days.
Bringing in Sean Payton would arguably be the biggest splash hire a team could make.
Paying him wouldn't be a problem. Acquiring him might be.
Payton is still under contract with the New Orleans Saints, so a team trying to acquire him would need to complete a trade with the Saints if they were to hire the coach. There are numerous examples of NFL teams trading a first-round pick for a coach, and that would likely be a starting point for New Orleans.
It looks like Payton may very well come back with a former NFC powerhouse. Indeed, the Arizona Cardinals are the +250 favorites to land the former Saints head coach. They still employ Kliff Kingsbury as head coach, but the 43-year-old reportedly ponders walking away after the season.
The Denver Broncos, who fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett following their Week 16 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams, have the next-best odds of landing Payton at +500. The Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys share the third-best odds at +500.
