The Chicago Bears' offensive line is undergoing some changes. During Monday's media viewing period, Lucas Patrick was seen playing at center with Cody Whitehair to his left. This change follows reports of a leg injury sustained by Teven Jenkins, as per The Chicago Tribune.
Jenkins spoke to the media last Thursday after the final joint practice with the Colts in Westfield, Ind. When asked about his ability to practice without interruptions up to that point, Jenkins expressed optimism. "It's good. It hopefully shows signs of my wanted durability for the rest of the season," he said. "So as long as I'm staying out here right now through training camp, hopefully it shows positive signs for the rest of the year."
Unfortunately, this new injury adds to the list of setbacks the offensive lineman has experienced over the past two seasons.
The player stepping into Jenkins' position on Monday, Cody Whitehair, has experience in the role. Pro Football Focus data indicates that Whitehair played all of his snaps last season (661) at left guard. Patrick, on the other hand, only played 10 snaps at center in the 2022 season. He also played 154 snaps at left guard and 105 at right guard last year. However, he played 822 snaps at center for the Packers in the 2021 season.
Running back Khalil Herbert, who will be directly affected by the line changes, didn't express concern when asked about the situation. "It doesn't do anything different for me," Herbert said. "I'm very comfortable with any of those guys in the room lining up in front of me. Half the time during practice, I won't notice until midway through. All those guys do a great job of rotating. We've done it all camp. So I'm very comfortable with anybody in front of me. I feel like they can get the job done."
The media will have a chance to discuss the changes on the offensive line with coach Matt Eberflus on Tuesday.
