Following their separation from quarterback P.J. Walker, anticipated to be Justin Fields' backup, the Bears are now cutting ties with former first-round offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, as reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Leatherwood, after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders in just his first season, was picked up by Chicago last summer. Although he was seen as a developmental player under general manager Ryan Poles, it seems Poles acknowledges this move as another miscalculation.
Leatherwood took the field in four matches last season, playing a total of 34 snaps. Even after his claim from the waivers last summer, the Bears remain committed to a guaranteed payment of $4.59 million to him. Throughout the summer, Leatherwood had been training as a left guard, positioned behind primary player Teven Jenkins. Despite showing promise in his new guard role, the standout performance of Ja'Tyre Carter at right guard might have influenced the decision.
The Bears' offensive line continues to be a weak spot, especially with the prevalent injuries amongst the primary players. It's highly probable the team will be scouting for an interior lineman on the waiver wire. Holding the top position on the waiver wire also grants them the advantage of first selection.
