The Bears began Fourth of July weekend by firing a longtime member of their front office.

Indeed, LaMar «Soup» Campbell, who has served since 2015 as vice president of player engagement was fired yesterday, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

In his role with the Bears, Campbell helped players deal with issues they were experiencing on and off the field, focusing on their personal and professional growth. He coordinated a variety of programs for veterans and rookies and provided guidance, support and resources to players and their families. It could be assisting them to find a place to live, an offseason internship or a charity to support that matches their interests.

The #Bears fired the director of player engagement LaMar "Soup" Campbell. You may recognize his name as one of the members of the committee the team assembled in the hiring process for a new GM/coach.

Bears insider John Schrock reported that Campbell was not only trusted by players but also by ownership. Earlier this offseason, chairman George McCaskey appointed Campbell to the search committee to find the Bears' next general manager and head coach. Campbell's job was to decide which candidates would be a good fit with the players already in the Bears' locker room.

That search ultimately led the Bears to hire Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus.

I find this very interesting that Ryan Poles was involved in firing the guy who helped hire him...
