Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus will handle defensive play-calling for the rest of the season.
Following Alan Williams' resignation last Wednesday, the Chicago Bears have been without a defensive coordinator.
In the wake of Williams' departure, head coach Matt Eberflus has taken over the defensive play-calling duties for the past two games. Although there was speculation that Eberflus might elevate someone from within the team to the role, he confirmed that he will continue to call the defensive plays for the rest of the season.
"Various strategies were discussed," commented Eberflus, "but this is our current direction."
The Bears' defensive performance this season has left much to be desired, possibly being one of the least effective in the NFL. They rank 31st in points allowed per game (35.3), 29th in both total yards (407.3) and passing yards (285.7) allowed per game, and 19th in rushing yards (121.7) conceded per game. Their third-down conversion defense is the worst in the league (60%), and they've only managed two takeaways and a single sack.
Injuries haven't helped matters either, with significant blows to the secondary. Cornerback Kyler Gordon is on the injured reserve list, while safety Eddie Jackson sat out the previous game due to a foot injury. Other players like cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson, along with safety Jaquan Brisker, got injured in the recent match.
On a brighter note, the Bears will meet the yet-to-win Denver Broncos at Soldier Field this week. It remains to be seen whether Eberflus and a potentially under-strength defense can turn things around and put an end to Chicago's 13-game losing run.
