The Chicago Bears seem to be leaning towards selecting USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the NFL draft, but GM Ryan Poles could have a surprise move in store.

Despite Williams being widely regarded as the top player in the 2024 class, the Bears' front office showed significant interest in Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy during his pro day on March 22. Additionally, LSU's Jayden Daniels claimed the Heisman Trophy last season, overshadowing Williams, while Drake Maye remains a top prospect on most mock draft boards.

Following the trade of three-year starter Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this month, Chicago is poised to select a quarterback early in the draft. However, Poles might be open to trading down a spot or two if he prefers another player over Williams, potentially acquiring valuable draft assets in the process.

A trade proposal outlined by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggests the Bears trading the top pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for the No. 2 selection and the 36th overall pick in the second round.

While Washington may entertain trade offers for the No. 2 pick, head coach Dan Quinn indicated that they are still evaluating quarterbacks. Chicago's unique position could offer Washington the opportunity to move up and select Williams, who hails from the D.C. area.

The Bears would need to convince Washington that they are committed to selecting Williams with the top pick if they don't trade down. This could require a substantial offer from Chicago to persuade Washington to part with valuable draft assets. However, securing Williams could be a game-changer for the Commanders and could kickstart their new era.

In summary, while the Bears may be leaning towards Williams, they could explore trading down with Washington to acquire additional draft capital while still potentially securing their desired quarterback.
