In order to make room for the new signings, the Bears bid farewell to Nick Amoah (OL), Justin Broiles (DB), and Damien Caffrey (TE). The signing of D'Anthony Jones was first reported by Aaron Wilson, a KPRC reporter based in Houston.
Jones, while a tad undersized for a three-technique at 6 feet and 276 pounds (he was previously listed at 283 pounds), has shown considerable promise. He clocked a 40-yard dash time of 5.15 seconds and achieved 23 reps of 225-pound bench presses.
Jones' performance on the field at Houston was noteworthy. Over three seasons, he tallied 15 sacks and 23 tackles for loss, including an impressive eight sacks and 13 TFLs last season. His ability to disrupt the ball was also exceptional, as he forced nine fumbles during his time at Houston, with five of those coming in his final year.
Despite his accomplishments, Jones was overlooked in the 2023 NFL Draft. However, the 6-foot, 276-pound defensive end had a phenomenal senior season, notching eight sacks, 13.5 tackles for loss, and leading the FBS with five forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus also awarded him the seventh-highest pass-rushing grade (93.1), the top score among edge players who had at least 92 pass-rushing snaps in 2022. It's clear the Bears see potential in Jones, and he'll certainly be a player to watch in the coming season.
