Bears Snapshot Series: Jerry Azumah
Jerry Azumah, a key linchpin in the dangerous 2000's Bears defense. A dependable defender and a skilled kick returner, Jerry had a brief but exciting career with the Bears. He was drafted by the Bears in the 1999 Draft. He played college at the University of New Hampshire where he was a four-year starter under Chip Kelly. He won the Walter Payton award as well. It seems a good amount of Bears have won the honor over the years. He played seven seasons, all with the Bears, and rode the bench his first couple of years. In 2001 he became a starter at cornerback and was voted to the Pro- Bowl in 2003. He was injury-riddled in his later years but in his prime, Jerry was exciting to watch and valuable to the franchise. He had 105 games with 48 starts. 384 tackles, 10 interceptions, 29 pass defense, 6.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and one recovery. He retired in 2006. Azumah became a board member of the University of New Hampshire Foundation in 2001. The Foundation builds private support for the University of New Hampshire. In the summer of 2003, Azumah donated a six-figure gift to the Foundation which was directed to the University's athletic department.
