Steve Belichick, the son of the renowned Patriots coach Bill Belichick, has been responsible for calling defensive plays for the Patriots over the past four seasons. His journey with the team began in 2012 when he was hired as a defensive assistant. He steadily climbed the coaching ranks and was eventually promoted to the role of safeties coach in 2016. In 2019, he assumed play-calling responsibilities after Brian Flores departed to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Since 2020, Steve Belichick has been serving as the Patriots' outside linebackers coach.
During the previous season, despite the Patriots' disappointing 4-13 record, their defense performed admirably, ranking seventh in the NFL by allowing an average of just 301.6 yards per game. They also conceded the seventh-fewest yards in the league, showcasing Steve Belichick's prowess as a defensive strategist.
