Herbert sustained this injury during the first half of Sunday's defeat to the Broncos. Head coach Brandon Staley emphasized on Monday that the team's priority is Justin Herbert's long-term well-being. Given the Chargers' 5-8 record and slim chances of making the postseason, it's evident that shutting Herbert down is the right decision.
Selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Herbert had an impressive streak of 62 consecutive starts. In late July, Los Angeles secured his future with the team by signing him to a five-year extension worth a reported $262.5 million.
However, the 2023 season has been disappointing for the Chargers, with inconsistency plaguing both their offense and defense. Herbert's passer rating remains at 93.2, similar to last season, but his yards per game dropped from 278.8 in 2022 to 241.1 in 2023.
In 13 games this season, Herbert completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Easton Stick is expected to take over as the Chargers' starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, starting with Thursday's game against the Raiders.
