The Dallas Cowboys have made a move to add speed and depth to their wide receiver corps by acquiring Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans. According to sources close to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Adam Schefter, the trade was finalized for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. Talks between the two teams had taken place last year, but they couldn't come to an agreement.

Cooks, who is under contract through 2024, will be paid $6 million this season by Houston and $12 million by Dallas after restructuring his contract. The move comes after the Cowboys lost veteran receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in a trade for a fifth-round pick. They had only added James Washington in free agency and Jalen Tolbert in the draft as a replacement. Unfortunately, Washington suffered a broken foot in training camp, and Tolbert only caught two passes in his rookie season.

The addition of Cooks, a speed threat who caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games for the Texans last season, will complement Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, who is returning from a torn ACL. The Cowboys believe Gallup will be much better in his second year off of major surgery.

Cooks, who turns 30 in September, has been traded four times in his career and has played for the Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints. He has recorded 630 receptions for 8,616 yards and 49 touchdowns. Cooks expressed his excitement about joining the Cowboys, saying, "Beyond blessed and can't wait to go be special for the star! Very thankful for the Jones family for this opportunity for my family and I."

The Cowboys' acquisition of Cooks is their second major trade in the past week, following the acquisition of cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts for a fifth-round pick. The team has historically built its roster through the draft and has one pick in each round. However, they had three fifth-round picks after compensatory selections were announced but have since dealt two of them.
