Several NFL teams have shown interest in Trey Lance, the former third overall pick of the San Francisco 49ers. Ian Rapoport, an NFL Network Insider, reported that these teams have contacted the 49ers to explore the possibility of acquiring Lance. It is important to note that the 49ers did not initiate these discussions.
The 49ers' quarterback situation has been quite peculiar lately. Unexpectedly, late-round draft pick Brock Purdy has emerged as the frontrunner for the starting role in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.
Teams may be more interested in acquiring Lance now, especially if they can get him for a lower price. This increased interest may be due to the fact that Purdy, who became the starter after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a broken foot in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins, has become more well-known. San Francisco then went on to win all five of Purdy's regular-season starts, averaging an impressive 33.6 points per game.
However, Purdy's elbow injury casts a shadow over any potential Lance trade. Rapoport emphasized that the 49ers would want to ensure Purdy's rehabilitation progresses smoothly before considering any deals. As of now, no trade seems imminent.
At the annual league meeting last month, 49ers' head coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch expressed their openness to entertain trade offers for any player on their roster. However, this doesn't necessarily imply that they are eager to finalize any deals.
In his budding career, Trey Lance has featured in eight games, including four starts. He boasts a 55% completion rate, having thrown for 797 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Additionally, Lance has showcased his athleticism by rushing for 54 yards and a touchdown.
To provide some security at the quarterback position, the Niners signed Sam Darnold this offseason, given the injury concerns surrounding both Lance and Purdy entering 2023.
