On 93.3 KJR Seattle radio, Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll disclosed that cornerback Devon Witherspoon, the fifth overall pick in this year's draft, is expected to sit out the team's Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams due to a hamstring issue.
Witherspoon was considered the top cornerback prospect in his draft class. The Seahawks acquired the fifth draft pick from the Denver Broncos as part of the Russell Wilson trade, making it possible for Carroll and his team to draft Witherspoon even after making the playoffs in 2022.
During his final season at Illinois, Witherspoon tallied 14 defended passes and three interceptions.
Witherspoon is set to join a star-studded Seattle secondary that includes breakout rookie corners Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant from 2022, along with Pro Bowl safeties Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams.
While it's early days, comparisons are already being made between this Seahawks secondary and the legendary "Legion of Boom" that propelled Seattle to its first Super Bowl title a decade ago. Should Witherspoon perform as expected, the emergence of a new "Legion of Boom" is certainly within the realm of possibility.
