The award was first established in 1970 and was named after the late Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton in 1999. Payton was not only an amazing force on the field, but he was an even better human being that gave back to the community as much as he could until his last breath.
The winner of the award each year receives a $250,000 donated to the winner's charity of choice. All other 31 nominees receive up to $40,000 donated to their charity of choice.
The winner of the award will be announced during NFL Honors, which airs the Thursday before the Super Bowl.
