Mark Maske of The Washington Post reports that the NFL recently lodged a grievance against the NFLPA. The grievance claims that the union has been encouraging "contract-negotiating tactics with teams.» The NFLPA quickly refuted these claims, deeming them as «ridiculous and without merit,» according to Maske.
Throughout the summer, it was evident that NFL clubs were hesitant to offer substantial contracts to prominent running backs. Notable players like 2022's top rusher Josh Jacobs (Las Vegas Raiders), Saquon Barkley (New York Giants), and Tony Pollard (Dallas Cowboys) all had franchise tags placed on them by their respective teams without any multi-year extension deals.
In another notable instance, 2021's top rusher, Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts, requested a trade following a meeting with team owner Jim Irsay in July, after it was apparent he wouldn't be offered a new contract. Taylor is approaching the end of his rookie contract.
Austin Ekeler from the Los Angeles Chargers had also expressed a desire to be traded earlier in the season. However, a middle ground was found when the Chargers included additional incentives to the concluding year of his contract.
Moreover, Ezekiel Elliott, a two-time top rusher, and four-time Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook were let go by the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings, respectively. Both players had to wait several months in the free agency before securing new teams, with Elliott moving to the New England Patriots and Cook signing with the New York Jets.
