As the end of the sixth round came near, Trestan Ebner had Chicago Panicking. The Baylor standout had been eyed by the Bears for months, and they knew if they let him go to free agency they would lose their chance to pick him up. So when they went to call him and his phone kept going straight to voicemail, they knew they had to take drastic action. With Poles under pressure, he reached out to his agent Ron Slavin.
«WE CAN'T PICK HIM IF WE CAN'T TALK TO HIM,» POLES TOLD SLAVIN, EXPLAINING THE BEARS HAD BEEN TRYING TO REACH EBNER AND THEIR CALLS ALSO WERE GOING STRAIGHT TO VOICEMAIL WITH TIME BECOMING CRITICAL."
Ron thought quickly and called up Ebner's sister instead, where she rushed to bring him the phone.

If not for Ron's quick thinking Poles would have likely had to have gone with another pick in the draft, leaving Ebner to try his luck on the open market. Ebner's sister helped him secure 3.8 million in money going forward for the next three years.
Although he had a stroke of luck, he is not out of the woods just yet. He has competition for the position and it's not uncommon for teams to cut rookies if they aren't up to snuff. Here's hoping Ebner keeps that phone working going forward.
