After activating Braxton Jones from injured reserve over the weekend, the Bears waived center Doug Kramer. Kramer, a former player for Illinois, appeared to be a candidate the Bears would have liked to retain for their practice squad, having initially included him on their 53-man roster.
However, the opportunity to add him to the practice squad was lost when the Arizona Cardinals picked him up off waivers.
In the past, the Bears enjoyed a favorable position in the waiver order due to their record, but with the Cardinals currently holding the league's worst record, they have taken the top spot. The Cardinals have acquired the second-year lineman, providing him with a promising chance to ascend their depth chart behind starting center Hjalte Froholdt and backup Keith Ismael.
The Bears' active roster features Lucas Patrick, Cody Whitehair, and Dan Feeney, all of whom are capable of playing center, though none have stood out in the position. Kramer, a sixth-round pick, was on injured reserve throughout the 2022 season and began this year on injured reserve as well, participating in only two plays against the Raiders in this season's regular game.
Kramer was likely seen as a potential asset for future development.
In addition to Kramer, the Bears previously lost guard Zachary Thomas, a 2022 draft choice, from their practice squad to the Rams last year and this year saw defensive tackle Travis Bell, a seventh-round pick, claimed off their practice squad by the Falcons.
Players on the practice squad, once waived, become free agents. The Bears also saw the departure of practice squad tackle Kellen Diesch, an undrafted free agent who was snapped up by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
