"We explored extensions and other possibilities," Hortiz stated on Thursday, as reported by ESPN's Kris Rhim. "We thoroughly considered every avenue, and ultimately, this decision aligned best with our and Keenan's interests."
In response to Hortiz's remarks, Allen's agent, Joby Branion, clarified that only one contract offer had been extended by the Chargers.
"Only a single offer was proposed," Branion clarified. "It entailed a reduction in pay for 2024 alongside a two-year extension, with further reductions in both years. We countered, but our proposal was declined. Subsequently, we were informed of the Chargers' intention to trade Keenan Allen."
Los Angeles managed to become cap compliant ahead of the new league year by releasing Mike Williams. Additional cap flexibility was gained through revised deals with Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa.
Allen had previously disclosed that the Chargers had requested a pay cut from him, citing his outstanding performance during the prior season as grounds for refusal.
"It was a firm 'no,'" Allen asserted. "I've just had my best season, so I'm not budging."
Consequently, Allen was traded to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a fourth-round pick, concluding his 11-season tenure with the Chargers. He leaves behind a significant legacy, ranking second in the franchise's history for career receptions (904) and receiving yards (10,530).
The acquisition of Allen bolsters the Bears' receiving corps alongside D.J. Moore, aiming to aid their new starting quarterback following the trade of Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the impending departure of Fields, the Bears are positioned to select Caleb Williams with the top pick in the upcoming draft.
Following the exits of Williams and Allen, the Chargers' receiving unit will be anchored by Quentin Johnston, Joshua Palmer, and Derius Davis. The team has also bolstered its tight end position with the additions of Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst in free agency, as they embark on their inaugural season under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
