In his recent mock draft, Colts insider James Boyd predicts a major trade between the Bears and Colts that satisfies the needs of both teams. He bases this forecast on some chatter around the league about a potential trade, which would involve the Bears acquiring the fourth overall pick, the 35th overall pick, one of the Colts' two fifth-round selections, and a first-round pick in 2024. Indianapolis, of course, would receive the first overall selection in such a trade. Boyd predicts that with the top pick, the Colts will select Alabama QB Bryce Young, which is a sensible move for a team that has struggled to find a franchise quarterback ever since Andrew Luck retired.
On the other hand, this proposed trade would help the Bears achieve something that GM Ryan Poles has expressed a strong interest in obtaining more draft picks. Last year, his shuffling of the draft board on Day 3 resulted in the Bears gaining several additional picks. In this hypothetical trade with the Colts, Chicago would regain a second-round pick that it lost in the Chase Claypool trade and acquire an additional first-round pick next season and an extra fifth-round pick in 2023.
