According to Marc Silverman, also known as "Silvy" from ESPN 1000's Waddle & Silvy show, Mooney has engaged in private discussions with team management regarding his reduced role in the offense this year. Silvy stated, "I can confirm that Darnell Mooney has privately discussed his concerns with management about his current role with the team. He's known for his strong work ethic, but he has kept his displeasure mostly private. He's eager for a more significant role."
Mooney's dissatisfaction is understandable given his limited involvement in the offense. He has only recorded 23 receptions on 39 targets, accumulating 345 yards and one touchdown, all of which are on track to be career lows, especially in a contract year. In seven out of the Bears' 11 games this season, he has caught two or fewer passes, and in the recent 31-26 loss to the Detroit Lions, he made just one catch for 24 yards.
Despite DJ Moore's arrival, which signaled that Mooney would no longer be the team's WR1 as he was in 2022, his role in the passing game has not seen a significant increase. This is surprising, considering that his opportunities did not grow even after the Bears parted ways with Chase Claypool earlier in the year, which should have opened up more chances for the 26-year-old receiver. Mooney currently ranks third in the pecking order behind Moore and tight end Cole Kmet.
Mooney is handling his frustration in a commendable manner. He is not resorting to passive-aggressive social media posts, "liking" comments about his usage, or removing references to the Bears from his Instagram account. Instead, he is actively communicating with his coaches to express his desire for a larger role. With only six games remaining in the season, it remains uncertain whether Mooney can fulfill his wish and regain his form before entering free agency.
