Montgomery has been a very solid running back ever since he was drafted in 2019. In his rookie year, he was splitting time with fellow RB Tarik Cohen. Overall, Montgomery finished his rookie season with 889 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Montgomery became the team's featured running back heading into the 2020 season. Before the regular season began, head coach Matt Nagy emphasized the offense would prioritize establishing a run game. In 2020, he finished the 2020 regular season with 247 rushes for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns. His 1,070 rushing yards ranked fifth in the NFL. He also caught 54 passes for 438 yards and two touchdowns. He was on pace to put up the same kind of numbers in 2021, but he was slowed down by an injury. He finished with 849 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns in 13 games.
On Tuesday, running back coach David Walker made a somewhat bold claim.
Here is the report that was sent out last week:
This is not a small comparison. Taylor is seen by many as the best running back in football. He led the NFL with 1811 yards in 2021.
