In the NFC North, the Detroit Lions currently hold a three-game lead over the Minnesota Vikings, with only three games remaining in the season. Their magic number to secure a playoff spot, division win, and the chance to host their first-ever playoff game at Ford Field is now down to just one.
The Lions are poised to receive a significant defensive boost from C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who returned to practice on Wednesday after being sidelined since Week 2 due to a pectoral muscle tear.
When a reporter asked Gardner-Johnson if he views the Lions as a threat in the postseason, his response went beyond expectations. "That's the dumbest question," Gardner-Johnson retorted, as reported by Ari Meirov. "You know we're a threat."
With a victory in any of their remaining games, the Lions can officially secure a playoff berth. Alternatively, any loss by the Minnesota Vikings would also seal the deal.
Following the Green Bay Packers' loss to the Buccaneers, they are no longer able to catch up to the Lions mathematically. Meanwhile, Detroit still has a slim chance at securing the top seed in the NFC, but it would necessitate winning all remaining games and the San Francisco 49ers losing two of their matchups.
At present, the Lions hold the No. 3 seed in the NFL, which sets up a potential first-round rematch with the Vikings at Ford Field.
The Lions' last playoff victory occurred during the 1991 season, making their potential postseason appearance all the more significant.
