The concussion was Tua's second recorded concussion of the season despite many believing it was his third.
However, according to sources, the Dolphins have been pleased with Tagovailoa's development this season under first-year coach Mike McDaniel.
Medical professionals also are confident that Tagovailoa should be able to resume his NFL career next season, if not sooner, sources said.
Teddy Bridgewater was active Sunday after being questionable with finger and knee injuries. Still, the veteran quarterback served as the backup to rookie starter Skylar Thompson in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Bills.
Tagovailoa started 13 games during the 2022 regular season, throwing for 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He played like an MVP candidate over his first nine starts, leading the Dolphins to an 8-1 record before his play dropped significantly down the stretch.
Ian Rapoport reports that retirement is "not on the table" for Tagovailoa and he's expected to be back for the 2023 season.
