DeSai's Football IQ Wins Eagles Over in Defensive Coordinator Search

Indeed, former Bears' DC Sean DeSai quickly separated himself from the pack of nine candidates to become the Philadelphia Eagles' new defensive coordinator. His extensive knowledge of football and football IQ impressed head coach Nick Sirianni, who likened DeSai to a "really sharp coach."

DeSai's background as a disciple of influential defensive coach Vic Fangio made him an attractive candidate for the Eagles. Fangio's scheme, which includes a 3-4 base, two-high safety shell, and coverages geared to prevent big plays without blitzing, aligns with Sirianni's vision for the team's defense.

Although Sirianni wouldn't reveal DeSai's defensive philosophy, he noted that the Eagles' defense will maintain similarities to the successful defense led by former coordinator Jonathan Gannon.

DeSai's past experiences with the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks demonstrate a preference for limited blitzing, which could help explain why the Eagles hired him over candidates with a more aggressive approach. Sirianni emphasizes the importance of balancing different coaching styles and hiring coaches with strong attention to detail. Ultimately, he aims to cast a wide net and find the best candidates for the job.
