Former Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is firm in his belief that the team should construct their strategy around Justin Fields and the talented DJ Moore.
Alshon Jeffery acknowledges the allure of Caleb Williams, the USC star and presumed No. 1 overall pick, for Bears general manager Ryan Poles and the team. However, he also sees equal potential in Justin Fields and advocates for the Bears to stick with the 25-year-old quarterback this offseason. Jeffery believes it's time to provide Fields with the support he needs to excel.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Under Center Podcast, Jeffery expressed his confidence in Fields' abilities: "I feel like in three years to me, I think I will keep him though because he's shown the capability. Like, you just gotta put the right pieces. And I feel like just put him in the best situation because he was showing that he can make throws. Obviously, he can use his legs. So I think if I'm the Bears, I will keep him and I will build around him and just try to trade that first pick back and just get some more draft picks, why not?"
Jeffery highlights the strong rapport between Fields and star receiver DJ Moore, emphasizing the importance of nurturing this connection for the Bears' rebuilding efforts: "I'm a huge fan. He's a baller, man. He's definitely a baller, and like I say, you keep Justin because he and Justin got great chemistry, you know. Sky's the limit. I just feel that you are few players away, just give it some time with everything. You got to be patient."
Despite Jeffery's preference to retain Fields, current indications suggest that the Bears are leaning towards drafting Williams at No. 1 overall. The team met with Williams at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine and plans to host him for a visit after his USC Pro Day. While Jeffery acknowledges Williams' talent, he maintains that Fields deserves the opportunity to thrive in Chicago.
Despite interest from teams like the Atlanta Falcons and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Fields, the trade market for the quarterback appears lukewarm as free agency approaches. Nevertheless, it seems that the Bears are poised to transition the franchise to Williams, marking the impending closure of the Fields era in Chicago.
