Daniel Greenberg reported that former NFL GM Scott Pioli said on NFL Network that he believes Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet is going to have a breakout season.
Pioli on Kmet: "This guy has all the tools and is a complete tight end. He's one of the top young talents at the position in the league."
I also share the idea that he will silence the doubters this season. In fact, the biggest critique of him is that he does not score touchdowns. Indeed, last season, he had 60 receptions for 612 yards, but he failed to score a touchdown.
While it's not great for a tight end, I believe this is more bad luck/bad utilization from the coaching staff. He was not receiving targets in the redzone. Jimmy Graham and Jesper Horsted were getting the bulk of the action near the goal line. This is a mystery as to why this was the case, but it still was.
However, I believe that if he gets used a little more as a redzone threat, the scores will come and he can really turn into a top 10 tight end in the league. Justin Fields is known to love his tight end a lot.
