The Bears selected Dominique Robinson in the 5th round of the draft a few weeks ago.

Robinson was a wide receiver at Miami (OH) until the 2020 season, but he then converted to defensive end. He has only two years of college experience at the position, the first of which was disjointed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bears writer Jacob Infante tweeted out yesterday that he think Robinson could turn out to be a great player in the future and that his ceiling is very high.

I'm really excited to see what the #Bears can get out of EDGE Dominique Robinson going forward.

His tape at Miami (OH) showcased fantastic athleticism and flexibility off the edge. If developed properly, he could prove to be a steal in Round 5.

However, in response to this tweet, 30+ years NFL scout Greg Gabriel said:

I doubt you'll see much this year. Needs to get stronger and how to use his hands. Should get a lot of special teams work while he learns

I think this is a fair assessment of Robinson. I also don't expect him to play a lot on defense this season. You might see him involved in a small rotation but I think it may take some time for him to develop into his full potential.

NFL.com's Lance Zierlein compared Robinson to DE Withney Mercelus:

Wideout turned quarterback hunter with the bricks and mortar needed to build an impactful career as a 3-4 outside linebacker or 4-3 rush end. Robinson frequently flashes despite his relative inexperience at the position. He's quick off the snap, using plus fluidity, athleticism and bend to trim the edge and assail the pocket. However, he needs additional moves and counters before he's ready to beat pro tackles. He must get stronger and more technically sound in run support. Aligning as a stand-up rush linebacker might help expand his range as a playmaker in space. Robinson projects as an unpolished gem with a high ceiling and stable floor.

While he may still be considered as a "project", make no mistake about it, he can play some great football! He is extremely athletic. He ran a 4.72 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and scouts had him even faster at his pro day.
